Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law

In this series, actor Arthur Hill portrayed Owen Marshall, a small town California lawyer who tried cases with the help of a group of younger attorneys. The show was directed by a young Steven Speilberg, and, coincidentally, was watched by housekeeper Alice on ABC's The Brady Bunch.

The Paper Chase

Paper ChaseThe trials and tribulations of James Hart, a first year Harvard law student were chronicled first in a book and then a film of the same title. In the series, John Houseman re-created his movie role as tyrannical Professor Kingsfield whose line about turning a young head full of mush into one that thinks like lawyer has become a classic for law students.

Rumpole of the Bailey

Rumpole, John Mortimer's creation from across the Pond, made his United States debut in 1977. The curmudgeonly barrister, portrayed by Leo Mackern over the past two decades, refuses to prosecute any case and finds himself defending some interesting characters. He is surrounded by an equally eccentric cast.

Storefront Lawyers

Robert Foxworth portrayed David Hansen, an attorney tired of life in a big firm who quits to open Neighborhood Legal Services, a non-profit organization offering legal assistance to the less fortunate. In an ironic twist, after the first 13 episodes, Hansen returned to his old firm along with his new associates.

Other legal shows from this period include:

  • The New Perry Mason (1973-1974) [IMDb]
  • The Young Lawyers (1970-1971) [IMDb]
