The trials and tribulations of James Hart, a first year Harvard law student were chronicled first in a book and then a film of the same title. In the series, John Houseman re-created his movie role as tyrannical Professor Kingsfield whose line about turning a young head full of mush into one that thinks like lawyer has become a classic for law students.

Robert Foxworth portrayed David Hansen, an attorney tired of life in a big firm who quits to open Neighborhood Legal Services, a non-profit organization offering legal assistance to the less fortunate. In an ironic twist, after the first 13 episodes, Hansen returned to his old firm along with his new associates.
